Hi, I'm Steve Bolt, a Wellington based photographer.
I have been dabbling in photography since my late teens.
Looking back at the stable of cameras I have used, I realise just how much and how long I have been looking at the world through viewfinders and lenses. Currently I use three 'stock' cameras. My Canon EOS 40D has superceeded my trusty 350D, both complementing my Olympus C5060Z Digital. But I don't neglect my good old, though now less used Canon EOS300 SLR and I sometimes use a Nikon F-301, which is a 'family heirloom'.
Having returned from some years overseas, in the late '90s I was encouraged to do something with the pile of negatives I had accumulated and stored away. So inspired, my professional career pretty much ignited just before Christmas 2000 with a couple of photographs being framed and sold rather quickly (good timing!).
So far there are over 750 of my images on walls around the world. And thanks to a number of projects including published calendars, some more recent commercial work and two exhibitions (2008 & 2009) to launch each of my DVDs, exposure of the public kind continues to grow my portfolio and further boost my profile.
I feel my role is to create a medium that conveys an essential connection between the subject and the viewer. I capture what I sense is the essence of an area. I like to take familiar places and shoot them from unique perspectives...mine I suppose. "Wellington by Night" is a good example of this. I am often asked where it was taken from? - for me, that is part of the excitement...giving people a different way of looking at familiarity...making the familiar new. People know the view but are challenged to decipher where the camera was when I took the photo.
We are all so close to the beauty of New Zealand...the broad landscapes, the wide and ever changing sea, our diverse city streets and skylines & breathtaking big skies... it doesn't seem far away, but to some of it is... and not enough of us are able to touch it often enough to remember.
This is what I endeavour to do with my imagery; my vision ... Photography of Land, Sea, City & Sky. To bring something familiar to busy people and make it brand new again; to rekindle and strengthen the memory of the land from which they are made.
